Life & Legacy Overview

Laetitia Tamko was born on October 25, 1992, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Moving to New York City at age thirteen, she initially spoke only French and found solace in learning acoustic guitar and drums. She went on to study chemical engineering at City College of New York, working as an engineer while secretly composing and recording music in her bedroom under the moniker 'Vagabon'.

Her 2017 debut full-length album 'Infinite Worlds' (Father/Daughter Records) caused an immediate critical sensation in the indie rock community. Combining driving post-punk guitars, delicate electronic soundscapes, and deeply poetic lyrics exploring immigrant identity, belonging, and vulnerability, Pitchfork designated the record 'Best New Music' and named her a rising icon of the modern DIY scene.

On her 2019 self-titled sophomore record (Nonesuch Records) and 2023 album 'Sorry I Haven't Called', Vagabon expanded her palette into lush electronic pop, house grooves, and Afropop rhythms. Producing and engineering her own music, she has toured internationally alongside Angel Olsen, Courtney Barnett, and Rostam Batmanglij, challenging traditional expectations of genre and race in contemporary alternative music.
Notable Works / Milestones:
  • Infinite Worlds (2017) - Critically Acclaimed Debut Album (Pitchfork Best New Music)

  • Sorry I Haven’t Called (2023) - Vibrant Electronic and Indie Record
  • Self-Taught Multi-Instrumentalist, Engineer, and Producer from Yaoundé, Cameroon
  • Featured in The New York Times, NPR Tiny Desk, and Pitchfork Festival Headliner
