In November 1830, at age twenty, Chopin departed Warsaw on a European concert tour just days before the outbreak of the November Uprising against Russian imperial rule. Heartbroken by the brutal crushing of Polish independence, Chopin settled in Paris in 1831, maintaining Polish exile identity for the rest of his life. Disdaining the spectacle of cavernous concert halls, he preferred the intimate acoustic salon culture of Paris, captivating audiences that included Franz Liszt, Eugène Delacroix, and Hector Berlioz with his delicate touch, revolutionary use of tempo rubato, and emotional nuance.
Chopin's intense, decade-long romantic relationship with French author George Sand (Aurore Dupin) coincided with his most productive creative period, producing masterpieces including the 24 Preludes Op. 28, the Ballades, and the heroic Polonaises. Afflicted with chronic pulmonary tuberculosis throughout his adult life, Chopin's health deteriorated rapidly, leading to his tragic death at age thirty-nine on October 17, 1849, at his apartment on Place Vendôme in Paris. While his body was interred at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, in accordance with his dying wish, his sister Ludwika secretly transported his heart back to his beloved homeland, where it remains enshrined in the pillar of the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw.
