Eminem

Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known globally by his stage name Eminem (and alter ego Slim Shady), is a towering cultural icon who revolutionized hip-hop and popular music at the turn of the twenty-first century. Raised in working-class poverty in Detroit, Michigan, amid a turbulent family life along the racially divided 8 Mile Road, young Marshall discovered his sanctuary in the dictionary and the art of rhyming, developing an extraordinary, obsessive mastery of complex multisyllabic rhymes and internal wordplay.

After years of relentless underground freestyle rap battles, Eminem was discovered in 1997 by legendary producer Dr. Dre after placing second at the Rap Olympics in Los Angeles. Their creative partnership yielded The Slim Shady LP (1999) and the monumental The Marshall Mathers LP (2000), which sold an astonishing 1.78 million copies in its first week in the United States, becoming the fastest-selling solo album in American history. Combining blistering satire, visceral vulnerability, and peerless technical flow, Eminem articulated the rage, alienation, and anxieties of a generation.

In 2002, Eminem starred in the semi-autobiographical drama 8 Mile. Its anthem "Lose Yourself" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song—the first hip-hop song in history to achieve the honor. With over 220 million records sold worldwide, fifteen Grammy Awards, an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, and diamond-certified records (The Eminem Show, Recovery), Eminem is universally recognized as one of the greatest lyricists in the history of music.
