In 1954, Kasuga released 'Otomi-san' (お富さん), a buoyant, rhythmically infectious track inspired by traditional Kabuki theater (*Yowa Nasake Ukina no Yokogushi*). The record became an unprecedented post-war cultural phenomenon, selling over 1.25 million copies in months and echoing from radios, public markets, and bathhouses across the recovering nation. Followed by melancholic masterpieces like 'Wakare no Ipponsugi' (The Farewell Cedar Tree, 1955), Kasuga established the distinct lyrical and melodic conventions of the modern Enka genre: themes of hometown nostalgia, parting lovers, stoic resilience, and expressive vocal vibrato (*kobushi*).
Over a forty-year recording career, Kasuga performed on NHK’s prestigious annual New Year’s Eve broadcast *Kohaku Uta Gassen* 21 times. Awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon by the Emperor of Japan in 1989 for his monumental cultural contributions, he passed away in Tokyo on October 22, 1991.
