On November 8, 1895, German physics professor Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen at the University of Würzburg discovered X-rays while experimenting with cathode rays inside a vacuum tube. He observed a faint fluorescent glow shimmering on a nearby barium platinocyanide screen. In late December 1895, he captured the world's first medical radiograph of his wife Anna Bertha's hand. For this breakthrough, Röntgen was awarded the inaugural Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. World Radiography Day was jointly established by ESR, RSNA, ACR, and ISRRT to celebrate diagnostic radiology, interventional radiography, MRI, CT, and radiation safety.
