Every year on October 25, the Republic of Slovenia observes Sovereignty Day (Dan suverenosti). Established by the Slovenian National Assembly in March 2015, this official memorial day commemorates the historic night in 1991 when the last occupying soldier of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) evacuated the Port of Koper, completing Slovenia’s territorial independence and actualizing national self-determination.
From the Ten-Day War to the Brioni Agreement
Following Slovenia’s declaration of independence on June 25, 1991, federal Yugoslav armed forces launched an assault on border checkpoints, sparking the Ten-Day War. Slovenia’s newly formed Territorial Defence and police forces successfully defended national infrastructure. Under the European-mediated Brioni Agreement, federal authorities agreed to a three-month moratorium and the complete withdrawal of all federal military forces.
The Final Departure from Koper Harbor
On the evening of October 25, 1991, the final contingent of Yugoslav troops embarked on transport vessels docked in the Adriatic port of Koper. By midnight, Slovenian soil was completely free of foreign military presence for the first time in modern history. Dan suverenosti honors the veterans and statesmen who secured democratic sovereignty without protracted regional bloodshed.
