Every year on October 25, the Republic of Slovenia observes Sovereignty Day (Dan suverenosti). Instituted by the National Assembly in 2015, this official state memorial day commemorates the historic night of October 25–26, 1991, when the final transport ship carrying units of the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) sailed away from the Port of Koper, leaving Slovenian territory completely free and sovereign.
From Independence Declaration to Complete Liberation
Following the overwhelming 1990 plebiscite and the June 25, 1991 declaration of independence, the newly formed Slovenian Territorial Defence fought bravely during the Ten-Day War. Under the European-brokered Brioni Agreement, Yugoslav authorities agreed to completely evacuate all military equipment and personnel from Slovenia within three months.
The Midnight Departure at the Port of Koper
Over several weeks, tons of heavy armaments and thousands of federal troops were loaded onto cargo ferries in Koper harbor. Just before midnight on October 25, 1991, the ferry Venus, followed by the ship Dura, slipped their moorings. At that moment, for the first time in modern European history, no foreign military soldier occupied Slovenian soil.
Celebrating Civic Maturity & European Integration
Unlike the protracted conflicts that engulfed other regions of the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia secured its independence through legal discipline, military bravery, and diplomatic maturity. On Dan suverenosti, veterans’ associations and state dignitaries gather in Koper and Ljubljana, celebrating the peaceful resolution that paved Slovenia's path into the European Union and NATO.
