In the turbulent aftermath of the August 1975 political shifts and the counter-coup of November 3, 1975 led by Brigadier Khaled Mosharraf, army chief Major General Ziaur Rahman was placed under house arrest in Dhaka Cantonment. On the night of November 6–7, 1975, soldiers of the Bangladesh Army alongside ordinary civilians revolted under the leadership of the Revolutionary Soldiers' Association (Biplobi Shainik Sangstha) organized by Lieutenant Colonel Abu Taher (Bir Uttam). Soldiers broke into Ziaur Rahman's residence, liberated him, and carried him triumphantly through the streets of Dhaka in an outpouring of mass civilian solidarity, cementing national sovereignty.
