In September 2014, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Harsh Vardhan announced November 7 as National Cancer Awareness Day across India. The date was intentionally selected to coincide with the birth anniversary of double Nobel laureate Marie Curie, whose discovery of radium enabled the invention of modern radiotherapy. India faces over 1.4 million new cancer diagnoses annually, and the day focuses on demystifying cancer, providing free community screenings for oral, cervical, and breast cancers, and reducing tobacco consumption.
