Resigning due to chronic health difficulties in 1879, Nietzsche spent the following decade producing his major philosophical treatises in Swiss alpine seclusion and Italian towns. His writing is characterized by an uncompromising literary style, rich aphoristic wit, and radical psychological insights into human nature. He critically dissected traditional religion, utilitarian ethics, and scientific optimism, proclaiming the "death of God" while examining the resulting cultural challenge of nihilism.
Nietzsche introduced landmark philosophical constructs that transformed existentialism, postmodernism, and psychology: the "will to power" (Wille zur Macht) as the prime psychological drive, the "Übermensch" (Higher Individual or Overman) who transcends herd morality to create self-derived life values, "eternal recurrence" as a test of life-affirmation, and the contrast between the rational Apollonian and ecstatic Dionysian artistic impulses. In January 1889, at age 44, he suffered a mental collapse in Turin, spending his remaining years in quiet care until his death on August 25, 1900.
