Despite his philosophical pacifism and dislike of war, Frederick proved himself an exceptionally brilliant military commander. During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, his decisive arrival with the Prussian Second Army at the Battle of Königgrätz shattered Austrian forces. In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, he commanded the multinational southern German armies with sensational success at the Battle of Wörth and Battle of Sedan, earning the deep affection of soldiers for his humanity and personal chivalry toward wounded adversaries.
Throughout his twenty-seven years as Crown Prince, Frederick and Victoria openly opposed the autocratic policies of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, advocating for the rule of law, religious tolerance, expansion of civil liberties, and peaceful alliance with Britain. In March 1888, following his father\'s death, Frederick ascended the throne as Emperor during what became known as the "Year of the Three Emperors" (Dreikaiserjahr). Tragically, Frederick was already dying of advanced laryngeal cancer. Unable to speak and communicating only through notes, he ruled for just ninety-nine days before passing away on June 15, 1888, at age fifty-six. Historians universally mourn his early death as a critical turning point that led Germany toward authoritarianism and World War I.
