Life & Legacy Overview

Danielle Yvonne Marie Antoinette Darrieux was a peerless titan of French cinema, theater, and music whose extraordinary career spanned an astonishing eight decades and more than one hundred and ten films, earning her recognition as one of the most enduring and luminous actresses in world cinema history. Born on May 1, 1917, in Bordeaux during World War I, Darrieux grew up in Paris, studying cello at the Conservatoire National de Musique before winning her first screen role at just fourteen years old in Wilhelm Thiele's Le Bal (1931).

Throughout the 1930s, Darrieux blossomed into France's ultimate ingenue and romantic heroine, scoring an international sensation in Anatole Litvak's historical tragedy Mayerling (1936) opposite Charles Boyer. Her sublime aristocratic poise, melodic singing voice, and radiant comedic timing took her to Hollywood for The Rage of Paris (1938) and to Broadway, where she succeeded Katharine Hepburn in Coco (1970).

Her greatest artistic triumphs came in the 1950s through her legendary collaboration with director Max Ophüls in three of French cinema's greatest masterworks: La Ronde (1950), Le Plaisir (1952), and especially The Earrings of Madame de... (1953) alongside Charles Boyer and Vittorio De Sica. Her performance as the tragic, vanity-stricken Madame de is universally cited by film scholars as one of the most transcendent acting achievements in cinema. In 2002, at age eighty-five, she enchanted modern audiences in François Ozon's hit musical mystery 8 Women (8 Femmes), winning the European Film Award. Danielle Darrieux passed away peacefully on October 17, 2017, at the extraordinary age of one hundred, honored as a national treasure of France.
