Deeply religious, Gounod briefly considered entering the Roman Catholic priesthood in the late 1840s before returning to secular theatrical composition. In 1859, he premiered his magnum opus, the five-act grand opera Faust (libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré after Goethe). Featuring immortal arias like the "Jewel Song" and the "Soldiers\' Chorus", Faust became a sensational worldwide phenomenon and one of the most frequently performed operas in history, inaugurating a new golden era for the Opéra de Paris. He followed this in 1867 with his sparkling, tragic masterpiece Roméo et Juliette.
Beyond his operatic triumphs, Gounod created one of the most beloved sacred pieces in Western music: the 1853 Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Bach, an exquisite melody superimposed over J.S. Bach\'s Prelude No. 1 in C major that became universally famous as Gounod\'s Ave Maria. Living in England during the Franco-Prussian War, he founded what would become the Royal Choral Society and deeply influenced British choral tradition. Honored as a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour, Charles Gounod passed away at Saint-Cloud on October 18, 1893, at age seventy-five, celebrated forever as the quintessential voice of French musical Romanticism.
