Life & Legacy Overview

Auguste Lumière was born on October 19, 1862, in Besançon, France. Working alongside his father Antoine and younger brother Louis in Lyon, the Lumière family operated a photographic factory producing dry gelatin photographic plates.

In the early 1890s, the Lumière brothers developed the Cinématographe—an ingenious, lightweight device combining camera, printer, and projector in a single compact apparatus. On December 28, 1895, in the Salon Indien du Grand Café on Paris’s Boulevard des Capucines, they presented the world’s first commercial public screening of projected motion pictures, showcasing ten short films including Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory and The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat to stunned audiences.

While Louis focused on optical technology, Auguste harbored an enduring scientific passion for biology, pathology, and medicine. Following their cinema triumphs, Auguste founded a major biomedical research institute in Lyon, publishing groundbreaking studies on tuberculosis, cancer therapeutics, cicatrization, and wound pharmacology. He died in Lyon in 1954 at age 91, leaving an immortal legacy spanning both cinema and medical science.
