Gabe Newell, affectionately known in gaming culture as "Gaben", is an American video game developer, technology visionary, co-founder and President of Valve Corporation, who developed legendary franchises like Half-Life and Portal, and revolutionized the global video game industry by creating the digital distribution platform Steam.
Born in Colorado on November 3, 1962, Gabe Logan Newell attended Harvard University before dropping out in 1983 to join Microsoft, where he spent thirteen years as a producer on the first three releases of the Windows operating system (Windows 1.0, 2.0, 2.1). Inspired by id Software's Doom, Newell and colleague Mike Harrington left Microsoft in 1996 to found Valve Corporation in Kirkland, Washington. In 1998, Valve released Half-Life, a revolutionary first-person shooter that redefined storytelling in gaming with seamless narrative immersion and artificial intelligence, followed by Counter-Strike, Portal, Team Fortress 2, and Dota 2. In 2003, Newell launched Steam, solving piracy and digital distribution bottlenecks by providing automated updates, community features, and digital storefront services. Steam grew into the dominant digital distribution platform for PC gaming, commanding over 75% of global market share with over 130 million active users. In 2022, Newell spearheaded the creation of the Steam Deck handheld gaming PC. Inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame in 2013 and awarded the BAFTA Fellowship in 2013, Newell is regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern digital entertainment.
