Business and technological insights by Gabe Newell on customer service, digital platforms, and piracy.
“We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem, not a pricing problem.”
“If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24/7, purchasable from the comfort of your couch, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked and comes out three months later, the pirate's service is more valuable.”
“The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work; it is by giving those people a service that's better than what they're receiving from the pirates.”
“Steam was born out of frustration with updating Counter-Strike; we realized that if we didn't automate software delivery, our servers would collapse.”
“Gamers are the smartest, most demanding, and most vocal consumer group in the world; if you try to lie to them, they will dissect your code and expose you in ten minutes.”
“The customer is always right, not because they are nice, but because their behavior in the marketplace reveals the unvarnished truth of your product.”
“At Valve, we don't have managers or bosses; people work on what they think is most valuable for the customers.”
“Open platforms always win in the long run over closed, proprietary walled gardens.”
“The Internet is a giant engine for eliminating middlemen; you either create genuine value for creators and players, or you will be bypassed.”
“Delivering games digitally seemed crazy in 2003 when everyone bought physical CDs in cardboard boxes; you have to skate to where the puck is going.”
Thoughts on environmental storytelling, hardware design, and player-driven narrative in game development.
“In Half-Life, we decided that the player would never leave the eyes of Gordon Freeman: no cutscenes, no taking away the mouse; complete narrative agency.”
“A great game doesn't just entertain; it respects the player's intelligence and invites them to solve puzzles creatively.”
“Modding is the lifeblood of game development; Counter-Strike and Dota were created by modders in their bedrooms, not corporate boardrooms.”
“Hardware should serve software; the Steam Deck was built so that players could carry their entire PC gaming library in their hands without compromise.”
“Late is just for a little while, but suck is forever.”
“Video games are the intersection of art, engineering, economics, and psychology; there is no medium more challenging or rewarding.”
“Brain-computer interfaces are the next frontier; within our lifetime, the way we experience virtual reality will leap beyond screens entirely.”
“Listen to player telemetry and data, but never let spreadsheets replace the intuitive joy of playtesting.”
“When you empower creators with tools and revenue sharing, the community will build experiences you could never dream of in-house.”
“Stay curious, build useful things, and let the work speak for itself.”
