Thoughts from Jim Cummings on bringing beloved Disney characters to life and visiting sick children in hospitals.
“Winnie the Pooh is not just a character; he is pure innocence, unconditional love, and a warm hug in a cynical world.”
“The wonderful thing about Tiggers is Tiggers are wonderful things! Their tops are made out of rubber, their bottoms are made out of springs!”
“When I call children's hospitals as Winnie the Pooh and talk to a sick little boy or girl who hasn't smiled in weeks, and hear them giggle—that is the greatest reward of my life.”
“You don't just do a voice; you have to step inside the heart of the character and look at the world through their eyes.”
“Sterling Holloway was a genius, and Paul Winchell was an inspiration; to carry their mantle for thirty-eight years is a sacred privilege.”
“People ask how I do both Pooh and Tigger in the same scene: Pooh is all quiet breath and tummy rumbles, while Tigger is an espresso shot on a trampoline!”
“Think, think, think: Pooh taught the world that you don't have to be a grand philosopher to have profound wisdom; simple kindness is enough.”
“Voice acting is the purest form of acting: you have no costume, no lighting, no special effects; just your vocal cords and your imagination.”
“Never lose your inner child; the moment you stop believing in talking bears and bouncing tigers, the magic of life disappears.”
“I have the greatest job in the world: I go to work in sweatpants, make silly noises into a microphone, and bring joy to millions of children.”
Stories from recording Darkwing Duck, Taz-Mania, and stepping in for Jeremy Irons on The Lion King.
“I am the terror that flaps in the night! I am the winged scourge that pecks at your nightmares! I am Darkwing Duck!”
“When Jeremy Irons blew his vocal cords singing 'Be Prepared' for Scar in The Lion King, they asked if I could match him; I stepped in and finished the song, and nobody noticed for twenty years!”
“Ray the Cajun firefly in Princess and the Frog was my love letter to New Orleans and the bayou country where I lived in my twenties.”
“The Tasmanian Devil is basically thirty seconds of aggressive gargling, screaming, and spinning; your throat feels like sandpaper, but it's worth every second.”
“Pete is the oldest animated character in Disney history; voicing him as that booming, conniving, cigar-chomping rogue is an absolute blast.”
“An audition tape shouldn't just show your range; it should show your ability to take direction and make an animator laugh.”
“Animation is a collaborative miracle: animators spend six months drawing one minute of your voice acting; we are equal partners in bringing magic to life.”
“Every dialect, every cough, every funny laugh you hear in a diner is a tool you store in your mental sound library.”
