Historical Background & Significance

Annual: November 9

On the evening of November 9, 1989, East German government spokesman Günter Schabowski mistakenly announced during a live press conference that border travel restrictions were being lifted immediately ('sofort, unverzüglich'). Within hours, tens of thousands of East Berliners streamed to the Bornholmer Straße crossing. Overwhelmed border guards stood down, opening the gates without firing a shot. East and West Germans embraced in tears atop the wall at the Brandenburg Gate, chipping away concrete slabs with hammers and chisels. In the United States, November 9 was officially designated World Freedom Day by presidential proclamation, honoring the peaceful triumph of liberty over totalitarian tyranny.
