On November 5, 2001, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/56/4 declaring November 6 as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. Throughout history, warfare has treated nature as an uncounted casualty: poisoned wells, burned forests, scorched crops, and deliberately ignited oil fires. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) established that over 40% of internal conflicts over six decades were tied to high-value natural resources.
