Historical Background & Significance

Annual: November 6
Svenska dagen was initiated in 1908 by the Swedish People's Party of Finland to strengthen solidarity and legal recognition for the Swedish-speaking population of Finland. Intentionally chosen to coincide with the memorial day of King Gustavus Adolphus, under whose reign Finland and Sweden shared deep administrative and cultural union, the day celebrates the bilingual constitutional character of modern Finland, highlighted by singing "Modersmålets sång" and conferring prestigious cultural awards.
