The liturgical feast day of Saint Martin de Porres, celebrated on November 3, commemorates the Peruvian Dominican lay brother (1579–1639) canonized as the universal patron of social justice, racial reconciliation, and health workers.
Born in Lima, Peru, to a Spanish nobleman and a freed Afro-Panamanian woman, Martin entered the Dominican Order as a humble servant due to colonial racial prohibitions. Through miraculous surgical healing, establishing the first orphanage and children's hospital in the Americas, and feeding hundreds daily, he broke racial divides. Canonized by Pope John XXIII on May 6, 1962, his feast on his heavenly birthday (November 3) inspires racial equality and healthcare service worldwide.
