Historical Background & Significance

Annual: November 3
The Feast of Saint Hubertus on November 3 commemorates the 8th-century Bishop of Liège, revered as the patron saint of hunters, foresters, archers, wildlife conservationists, and hunting dogs.
According to legend, while hunting on Good Friday in the Ardennes forest, nobleman Hubert encountered a majestic stag bearing a luminous crucifix between its antlers, and heard a voice urging him to turn his heart to God and respect nature. Hubert renounced his worldly honors, distributed his wealth to the poor, was ordained by Saint Lambert, and became Bishop of Maastricht and Liège. His teachings established the foundational principles of ethical hunting: taking only what is needed, sparing mothers with young, and respecting wild animals as God's sacred creation.
