Carl Edward Sagan was born on November 9, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York. As professor of astronomy and space sciences at Cornell University and director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies, Sagan contributed to Mariner, Viking, Voyager, and Galileo missions. In 1977, he chaired the committee that curated the Voyager Golden Record, carrying Earth's sounds, music, and images into interstellar space. In 1980, his television series 'Cosmos: A Personal Voyage' captivated over 500 million viewers, making him the most effective science communicator in history. On February 14, 1990, at Sagan's request, NASA turned Voyager 1's camera around to capture the iconic 'Pale Blue Dot' photo from 3.7 billion miles away, inspiring his famous reflection on our duty to deal more kindly with one another and preserve the only home we've ever known.
