Life & Legacy Overview

Born in North Adams, Massachusetts, on November 5, 1885, to French-Canadian parents, Will Durant was educated by Jesuits at Saint Peter's College in Jersey City before pursuing graduate studies in philosophy and biology at Columbia University under John Dewey, earning his Ph.D. in 1917. In 1926, his accessible survey The Story of Philosophy became an unprecedented global publishing phenomenon, selling millions of copies and proving that complex philosophical thought could be lucidly communicated to the general public.

With the financial independence gained from his bestseller, Durant and his brilliant wife and intellectual partner Ariel Durant embarked on a heroic five-decade literary expedition: writing The Story of Civilization. Spanning 11 massive volumes and over four million words published between 1935 and 1975, the series covered global human history from prehistoric antiquity through the Napoleonic era, pioneering "synthetic history" by weaving economics, science, religion, literature, art, and philosophy into a cohesive human tapestry.

Durant was an impassioned champion of civil rights, women's suffrage, and Indian independence, authoring The Case for India in 1930 after witnessing colonial subjugation during his travels. In 1968, Will and Ariel were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for Rousseau and Revolution (the 10th volume), and in 1977, President Gerald Ford presented them with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His humanist prose remains a masterclass in intellectual clarity and moral warmth.
