Life & Legacy Overview

Stanley Cortez was born Stanislaus Kranze in New York City on November 4, 1908, the younger brother of film star Ricardo Cortez. Beginning his career as a still portrait photographer for renowned pictorialists Edward Steichen and Bachrach, Cortez transitioned into cinema in the late 1920s, rapidly mastering the expressive nuances of black-and-white celluloid lighting.

In 1942, Orson Welles chose Cortez to photograph his ambitious period drama The Magnificent Ambersons. Cortez designed revolutionary continuous tracking shots and utilized intricate deep-focus compositions that captured the grand decadence and decay of the Amberson mansion, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Black-and-White Cinematography. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps alongside directors Frank Capra and John Huston.

In 1955, Cortez created his visual magnum opus in Charles Laughton’s spellbinding gothic fable The Night of the Hunter. Infusing German Expressionist shadow play, lyrical fairy-tale riverboat sequences, and stark chiaroscuro lighting, Cortez sculpted Robert Mitchum’s malevolent preacher and Lillian Gish’s maternal vigil with haunting poetic majesty. Cortez went on to collaborate with Samuel Fuller on Shock Corridor (1963) and The Naked Kiss (1964), serving two terms as president of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).
