During the genocide and liberation struggle of 1971, Shujeo Shyam joined the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, the clandestine radio station broadcasting from exile. In those perilous days, Shyam composed and arranged immortal patriotic anthems that galvanized seven crore Bengalis and freedom fighters (Mukti Bahini) battling for independence. His masterpieces—including "Bijoy Nishan Urchhe Oi" (sung by Ajit Roy), "Rokto Diye Naam Likhechi Bangladesher Naam", "Muktir Shongram Cholbei", and "Rokto Shingho Duar Khulo"—became the defiant voice of a nation breaking the chains of tyranny.
Following independence, Shyam contributed prolifically to Bangladeshi cinema and television, composing sublime melodies for acclaimed films such as Hason Raja, Joyjatra, Obujh Bou, and Eki Britte. His artistic versatility earned him three Bangladesh National Film Awards for Best Music Direction and Best Music Composer.
In 2018, the Government of Bangladesh bestowed upon him the prestigious Ekushey Padak, the nation's second-highest civilian honor. After battling cancer and kidney ailments, Maestro Shujeo Shyam passed away on October 17, 2024, at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka at the age of seventy-eight, leaving a legacy eternally woven into the fabric of sovereign Bangladesh.
