In the early 1960s, alongside Malay Roy Choudhury, Shakti Chattopadhyay, and Samir Roychoudhury, he spearheaded the 'Hungryalist Movement' (Hungry Generation), issuing provocative manifestos that sent shockwaves through the conservative literary establishment. His short stories, such as 'Kritadas Kritadasi' (Slaves) and 'Biplob O Rajmohan', discarded conventional plot geometry in favor of stream-of-consciousness, black humor, and philosophical vertigo.
Over a four-decade writing career, Chattopadhyay authored seminal novels including 'Ekhon Jibon', 'Swarger Nirjan Upakul', 'Kukurer Chokhe Jol', and 'Ami O Banabihari'. In 2004, the Sahitya Akademi conferred upon him India’s highest national literary honor for 'Ami O Banabihari'. Today, critics and scholars recognize him as one of the most brilliant modernist stylists the Bengali language has ever produced.
