Life & Legacy Overview

Born Ganesh Kumar Narwode in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra in 1950, he adopted the stage name Sadashiv Amrapurkar. Starting his creative journey in Marathi experimental theatre, he won numerous state awards as an actor and director before director Govind Nihalani cast him as the menacing, corrupt politician Rama Shetty in the parallel cinema masterpiece Ardh Satya (1983). For this electrifying debut, Amrapurkar won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 1991, he created cinema history by becoming the first recipient of the Filmfare Award for Best Villain for his groundbreaking portrayal of the brothel owner "Maharani" in Mahesh Bhatt’s Sadak. Over a career spanning more than 300 films across Hindi, Marathi, and regional cinema, he mastered both chilling villainy and hilarious comic timing (Aankhen, Ishq, Coolie No. 1). Beyond acting, Amrapurkar was a tireless grassroots social activist who worked extensively for rural water conservation, secular education, and farmers' welfare in Maharashtra before his passing on November 3, 2014.
Notable Works / Milestones:
