In the early 1960s, while working at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mundell published groundbreaking papers on monetary policy in open economies. Together with British economist Marcus Fleming, he developed the 'Mundell-Fleming Model', which demonstrated how international capital mobility determines the relative effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policy under floating versus fixed exchange rates. He also formulated the 'Mundellian Trilemma' (or Impossible Trinity), showing that a nation cannot simultaneously maintain a fixed exchange rate, free capital movement, and independent monetary policy.
In 1961, Mundell published his seminal treatise 'A Theory of Optimum Currency Areas'. His theoretical framework proved that geographically integrated regions with high labor mobility could share a single currency to eliminate transaction costs and stabilize trade. This revolutionary economic vision directly inspired European leaders—including Jacques Delors—in the creation of the Economic and Monetary Union and the historic launch of the Euro in 1999. In October 1999, Mundell was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2002 and passed away in Tuscany, Italy, on April 4, 2021.
