Life & Legacy Overview

Robert Michael Mapplethorpe was born in Floral Park, Queens, New York, on November 4, 1946. He studied painting, drawing, and sculpture at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1963 to 1969. Living at the historic Chelsea Hotel with singer-songwriter and poet Patti Smith, Mapplethorpe began taking photographs using a Polaroid camera before acquiring a large-format Hasselblad press camera in the mid-1970s.

Mapplethorpe approached the photographic frame with the rigorous formal geometry of classical Greek sculpture and Michelangelo. Working almost exclusively in medium- and large-format black-and-white silver gelatin prints, he produced breathtaking studio portraits of cultural luminaries—including Patti Smith, Andy Warhol, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Deborah Harry—alongside exquisite floral studies of calla lilies, tulips, and orchids that treated botanical forms with sculptural sensuality.

His uncompromising photographs challenged societal taboos and sparked historic national debates in the United States over public arts funding, censorship, and the First Amendment, culminating in the landmark 1990 Cincinnati obscenity trial that resulted in a triumphant acquittal for artistic freedom. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1986, Mapplethorpe established the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation to promote photography and fund AIDS research before passing away in Boston on March 9, 1989, at age forty-two.
