Ramesh Chandra Lahoti

Ramesh Chandra Lahoti was born on November 1, 1940, in Guna, Madhya Pradesh. He enrolled as an advocate in 1962, earning widespread respect for his encyclopedic knowledge of constitutional law and civil jurisprudence. He was elevated to the bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 1988 and transferred to the Delhi High Court in 1994.

In December 1998, he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of India, ascending to Chief Justice of India on June 1, 2004. During his tenure, he authored seminal verdicts on criminal law reforms, election transparency, and the rights of citizens against unlawful executive actions.

Following retirement in October 2005, Justice Lahoti was appointed to prestigious international arbitration panels, remaining an uncompromising moral compass for the legal fraternity until his passing in March 2022.
