Paul Dirac
A titan of 20th-century physics who shared the 1933 Nobel Prize in Physics with Erwin Schrödinger, Paul Dirac formulated the Dirac equation unifying quantum mechanics and special relativity, which mathematically predicted the existence of antimatter (the positron) and founded quantum electrodynamics.

In 1928, Dirac achieved one of the most astonishing breakthroughs in scientific history by formulating the Dirac equation. Describing the relativistic behavior of the electron, his equation not only naturally accounted for electron spin, but also yielded negative energy states that compelled him to propose the existence of an antielectron—a particle identical to the electron in mass but with opposite electric charge. Four years later, in 1932, Carl Anderson discovered this predicted particle in cosmic radiation, dubbing it the 'positron' and validating Dirac's genius.
Appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge in 1932 (the historic chair previously occupied by Sir Isaac Newton), Dirac held the post for thirty-seven years. He authored 'The Principles of Quantum Mechanics' (1930), which introduced bra–ket notation and remains the definitive foundational textbook on the subject. Dirac spent his final years as a research professor at Florida State University in Tallahassee, where he passed away on October 20, 1984. Niels Bohr famously declared that of all theoretical physicists, Dirac possessed the purest soul.
