Following the partition of 1947, Bogra chose a diplomatic career, serving with exceptional distinction as Pakistan's ambassador to Burma, Canada, and the United States (1952–1953). In April 1953, he was recalled from Washington to assume office as Prime Minister of Pakistan. In an effort to resolve the deadlock over the country's constitution, he proposed the celebrated 'Bogra Formula' in October 1953, an ingenious bicameral federal structure designed to give East Bengal equal legislative representation and end regional disparity.
Bogra made monumental contributions to international relations, leading Pakistan's delegation to the historic 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, Indonesia, which laid the bedrock of the Non-Aligned Movement. He later returned to Washington as ambassador and served as Foreign Minister until his sudden passing in Dhaka on January 23, 1963. He was laid to rest with full state honors in the family graveyard of the Bogra Nawab Palace.
