Life & Legacy Overview

Born in Lima, Peru, on December 9, 1579, Martin de Porres was the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman, Don Juan de Porres, and Ana Velázquez, a freed Panamanian woman of African descent. Barred by colonial law from entering religious orders due to his mixed African race, Martin entered the Dominican Convent of the Holy Rosary as a humble servant (donado), performing the most menial tasks including sweeping, laundry, and infirmary cleaning. Through his surgical apprenticeship, profound spiritual holiness, and miraculous healing touch, he treated thousands of sick individuals regardless of wealth or skin color. He established the first orphanage and children's hospital in the New World, distributed daily food to hundreds of destitute citizens, and was famously renowned for his tender love for animals, even feeding cats, dogs, and mice from the same bowl. Following his death on November 3, 1639, he was mourned by all social classes and was canonized by Pope John XXIII in 1962 as the universal Patron Saint of Social Justice and Racial Harmony.
