Collaborating with legendary writers such as Umberto Eco and James Joyce's texts, Berio explored the musicality of human language. In his seminal electroacoustic work 'Thema (Omaggio a Joyce)' (1958), he transformed the recorded speaking voice of his wife, soprano Cathy Berberian, into shimmering electronic textures. Between 1958 and 2002, he composed the immortal 'Sequenza' series—fourteen solo works that pushed instruments ranging from the flute, trombone, and viola to the female voice to the absolute outer boundaries of human virtuosity.
In 1968, Berio unveiled his magnum opus, 'Sinfonia', composed for the New York Philharmonic and The Swingle Singers. Incorporating quotations from Mahler’s Second Symphony, Samuel Beckett’s 'The Unnamable', and slogans from the May 1968 Paris protests, 'Sinfonia' became the definitive sonic monument of post-modern classical music. Serving on the faculties of Juilliard and Harvard, and directing IRCAM’s electro-acoustic department in Paris, Berio was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 1989 and the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal. He passed away in Rome on May 27, 2003.
