Life & Legacy Overview

Sir Kingsley William Amis was born on April 16, 1922, in London. Educated at St John's College, Oxford, where he formed a lifelong literary friendship with poet Philip Larkin, Amis served in the Royal Corps of Signals during World War II before taking up a lectureship in English at the University College of Swansea in Wales.

In 1954, Amis published his debut novel 'Lucky Jim', chronicling the misadventures of junior history lecturer Jim Dixon as he punctures the pretentious academic snobbery of provincial university life. The book became an explosive cultural sensation, capturing the irreverent, anti-elitist ethos of Britain's post-war generation and winning the Somerset Maugham Award.

Over four decades, Amis produced more than twenty novels, six volumes of poetry, and incisive literary essays, spanning genres from science fiction and James Bond espionage (*Colonel Sun*, under the pseudonym Robert Markham) to psychological ghost stories (*The Green Man*). In 1986, his melancholic, bitterly funny masterpiece 'The Old Devils' won the Booker Prize. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 for services to literature, Amis passed away in London on October 22, 1995.
