Khan Jahan was far more than a territorial administrator; he was a humanitarian civil planner of genius. To provide potable water in a saline delta, he excavated colossal water reservoirs ('dighis'), including the famous Khan Jahan Ali Dighi (Thakur Dighi) and Ghoradighi, which continue to supply fresh water to local populations six centuries later. He built an extensive network of brick-paved highways, stone bridges, and drainage systems that connected the remote delta to regional trade arteries.
Architecturally, Khan Jahan created an original 'Khan Jahani' style of Islamic architecture characterized by thick tapering walls, terracotta ornamentation, Bengali curved cornices, and brick domes. His magnum opus, the Sixty Dome Mosque (Shat Gombuj Masjid), featuring 77 low domes and 60 stone pillars, remains the largest historical sultanate-era mosque in Bangladesh and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Khan Jahan passed away on 27 Zilhaj 863 AH (October 25, 1459). His mausoleum complex in Bagerhat attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and historians annually.
