Kenneth Henry Miles was born on November 1, 1918, in Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire, England. An apprentice at Wolseley Motors, Miles served as a tank commander in the British Army during World War II, landing in Normandy shortly after D-Day in 1944.
Moving to Southern California in the 1950s, Miles became a dominant force in American road racing, designing, building, and racing custom specials. In 1963, Carroll Shelby hired Miles as chief test driver for Shelby American, where he perfected the AC Cobra, Sunbeam Tiger, and Shelby Mustang GT350.
When Henry Ford II ordered Carroll Shelby to build a sports car capable of defeating Ferrari at Le Mans, Miles became the engineering soul of the Ford GT40 Mk II. In 1966, Miles won both the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring before leading the historic 1-2-3 finish at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Tragic team management photo-finish orders denied him official victory. Two months later, Miles died testing the Ford J-car in Riverside, California. His immortal story was depicted in the Oscar-winning film 'Ford v Ferrari' (2019), where he was portrayed by Christian Bale.
