During the civil-military dictatorship (1973–1985), Batlle was stripped of his political rights and repeatedly arrested for defending democratic institutions. Following the restoration of democracy, Batlle’s fifth presidential bid culminated in his historic election as President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, taking office on March 1, 2000.
Batlle’s presidency was defined by extraordinary courage in two monumental arenas. Firstly, breaking decades of official silence, he established the 'Comisión para la Paz' (Commission for Peace) in 2000, which conducted the first formal state investigation into the fate of dissidents disappeared during the dictatorship. Secondly, when the devastating Argentine financial collapse of 2001–2002 triggered a massive run on Uruguayan banks, Batlle refused to default on foreign debt, successfully negotiating a bridge loan with US President George W. Bush and engineering a voluntary debt restructuring that saved Uruguay from hyperinflation and set the stage for two decades of prosperity. He passed away on October 24, 2016, on the eve of his 89th birthday.
