When Napoleon Bonaparte dispatched a massive armada under General Charles Leclerc in 1802 with secret orders to re-establish chattel slavery, Dessalines waged a ferocious defensive campaign, most famously at the Siege of Crête-à-Pierrot. Following Louverture's treacherous capture and deportation, Dessalines took supreme command of the indigenous revolutionary army, rallying formerly divided factions under a new red-and-blue flag created by ripping the white center out of the French tricolor.
On November 18, 1803, at the epic Battle of Vertières, Dessalines decisively crushed the veteran French army under General Rochambeau, forcing the complete evacuation of French troops. On January 1, 1804, at Gonaïves, Dessalines proclaimed the independence of Saint-Domingue, permanently restoring its indigenous Taíno name: Haiti (Ayiti, "land of high mountains"). Haiti became the first independent republic in Latin America, and the first nation in human history created by enslaved people who threw off their chains. Crowned Emperor Jacques I in October 1804, Dessalines was assassinated by political conspirators at Pont Rouge on October 17, 1806. In Haiti, October 17 is permanently commemorated as "Dessalines Day" (Fête Dessalines), a national public holiday honoring the liberator of the Black Republic.
