Life & Legacy Overview

James Grover Thurber (December 8, 1894 – November 2, 1961) was one of America’s most beloved and celebrated humorists, short story writers, essayists, and cartoonists. As a foundational contributor and editor for The New Yorker, Thurber’s whimsical prose, poignant wit, and delightfully minimalist line drawings helped establish the magazine's distinctive urbane sensibility and redefined American literary humor.

Midwestern Roots & Early Visual Impairment

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Thurber's childhood was marked by a tragic arrow accident while playing with his brothers, which cost him his left eye and left him with gradually failing vision in his right. Despite this severe impairment, Thurber developed an extraordinary auditory memory and vivid interior imagination. After attending Ohio State University and working as a code clerk in Paris following World War I, he joined The New Yorker staff in 1927 with the encouragement of his close friend and collaborator E.B. White.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty & Fables

In 1939, Thurber published his masterwork short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty in The New Yorker. Portraying a meek, henpecked husband who escapes his mundane suburban errands through heroic, cinematic daydreams, the character of "Walter Mitty" entered the English language and Oxford English Dictionary as the universal archetype for escapist daydreaming. His other celebrated books include My Life and Hard Times (1933), widely regarded as one of the funniest autobiographies in American literature, and Fables for Our Time (1940).

The Droll New Yorker Drawings & Triumph Over Blindness

Thurber was equally famous for his iconic cartoons featuring melancholy hound dogs, baffled men, and formidable women, famously sketched with an effortless, wobbly line. When E.B. White rescued some discarded sketches from a wastebasket and submitted them to The New Yorker, they became instant sensations. As total blindness descended in the 1940s and 1950s, Thurber continued writing and dictating prolifically, earning a special Tony Award for his Broadway revue A Thurber Carnival before passing away in New York on November 2, 1961.
