Bunin's early masterpieces, including 'The Village' (1910) and 'Dry Valley' (1912), provided an unsparing yet deeply compassionate portrait of rural Russian peasant life. His 1915 novella 'The Gentleman from San Francisco' was instantly hailed as a world masterpiece: a chilling, philosophical allegory of Western consumerist hubris and the inevitability of mortality aboard a luxury ocean liner.
A staunch opponent of the Bolshevik Revolution, Bunin documented the chaos in his harrowing diary 'Cursed Days' before fleeing Russia aboard an emigrant freighter in 1920. Living in exile in Grasse and Paris, he penned his autobiographical tour de force 'The Life of Arseniev' and his celebrated erotic collection 'Dark Avenues'. In 1933, the Swedish Academy awarded Bunin the Nobel Prize in Literature 'for the strict artistry with which he has carried on the classical Russian traditions in prose writing.' He died in Paris on November 8, 1953.
