Life & Legacy Overview

Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari was born on May 2, 1940, in Choti Zareen, Dera Ghazi Khan, into the aristocratic chief family of the Baloch Leghari tribe. Educated at Aitchison College in Lahore, Forman Christian College, and St Catherine's College, Oxford, where he earned a master's degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), Leghari entered the Civil Service of Pakistan before joining active democratic politics following the death of his father in 1973.

Joining the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Leghari proved a steadfast democratic leader, enduring imprisonment during the military regime of General Zia-ul-Haq for his role in the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD). He served as Minister for Water and Power and briefly as Foreign Minister in Benazir Bhutto's cabinets. In November 1993, backed by the PPP, Leghari was elected 8th President of Pakistan by a decisive electoral college margin.

As President, Leghari steered the nation during intense constitutional friction. In November 1996, citing governance crises and economic turbulence, he invoked Article 58(2)(b) of the Constitution to dissolve Benazir Bhutto's government. In December 1997, amidst an acute constitutional confrontation between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Supreme Court Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, Leghari chose to resign with dignity rather than violate constitutional norms. He later founded the Millat Party and served in parliament until his death in Rawalpindi on October 20, 2010.
