Life & Legacy Overview

Born in Sterling, Connecticut, on November 6, 1851, Charles Henry Dow was raised on a family farm. Leaving school at an early age following his father's death, he trained as a newspaper reporter in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, distinguishing himself through his meticulous regional investigative reporting on regional steamships and the Leadville silver mining boom in Colorado.

In 1880, Dow relocated to New York City to work as a financial reporter on Wall Street, where the trading floor was rife with insider manipulation and rumors. In November 1882, Dow partnered with fellow journalists Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser to establish Dow, Jones & Company in a modest basement office behind a soda shop at 15 Wall Street. They began delivering hand-written two-page financial summaries ("flimsies") directly to stockbrokers, prioritizing unbiased, factual reporting.

In July 1889, Dow and Jones converted their bulletin into a daily newspaper named The Wall Street Journal, with Dow serving as its inaugural editor. To provide a reliable, objective benchmark for market health, on May 26, 1896, Dow created the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), calculating the arithmetic average of twelve major industrial stocks. His analytical Wall Street Journal editorials—examining market trends, economic cycles, and public psychology—were codified posthumously into "Dow Theory," creating the modern discipline of technical analysis and transforming financial reporting into an indispensable pillar of market transparency.
