Frustrated by the rampant human calculation errors in astronomical and navigation tables of his era, Babbage famously exclaimed: "I wish to God these calculations had been executed by steam!" In 1822, he presented a paper to the Royal Astronomical Society proposing the Difference Engine, a mechanical gear-driven calculating machine designed to tabulate polynomial functions automatically using the method of finite differences.
In the 1830s, Babbage conceived his greatest masterpiece: the Analytical Engine. Far surpassing a mere calculator, the Analytical Engine was the world's first general-purpose, Turing-complete mechanical computer design. It featured an arithmetic logic unit (which Babbage called "the Mill"), integrated memory storage ("the Store"), conditional branching, and punch-card data input adapted from the Jacquard silk loom. His intellectual collaborator Ada Lovelace recognized the revolutionary nature of the machine, authoring the first computer algorithm in history. Babbage passed away in London on October 18, 1871. In 1991, the London Science Museum built a complete working Difference Engine No. 2 from Babbage's original 1847 blueprints, proving that his mechanical computing designs were entirely accurate.
