Cary Elwes

Cary Elwes was born on October 26, 1962, in Westminster, London, the son of portrait painter Dominick Elwes and interior designer Tessa Kennedy. Educated at Harrow School, he moved to the United States to study acting at Sarah Lawrence College and the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York. He made his feature film debut in Marek Kanievska's acclaimed drama 'Another Country' (1984) alongside Rupert Everett and Colin Firth.

In 1987, Elwes achieved worldwide fame when Rob Reiner cast him as Westley in 'The Princess Bride', William Goldman's fairy-tale fantasy romance. His dashing swordplay, deadpan comedic timing, and romantic delivery of 'As you wish' established the film as one of the most quotable and treasured movies of all time. He followed with major roles in Edward Zwick's Oscar-winning Civil War epic 'Glory' (1989), Francis Ford Coppola's 'Bram Stoker\'s Dracula' (1992), Mel Brooks's satirical comedy 'Robin Hood: Men in Tights' (1993), and the disaster blockbuster 'Twister' (1996). In 2004, Elwes starred as Dr. Lawrence Gordon in James Wan's indie horror breakout 'Saw', which spawned one of the highest-grossing horror franchises in cinema history. In 2014, he published the New York Times bestselling memoir 'As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride'.
