During the disastrous winter retreat of the Tridentina Division across the frozen steppes of the Don River—where tens of thousands of frozen, starved soldiers perished—Don Gnocchi marched alongside the wounded, giving spiritual solace and receiving the dying promises of soldiers who pleaded with him: 'Take care of our children back home.' He miraculously survived with severe frostbite, returning to Italy with a sacred vowed mission.
Following the war, Don Gnocchi established the 'Federazione Pro Juventute' (now the Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi), building modern rehabilitation centers across Italy to provide free medical care, physical therapy, prosthetic limbs, and vocational schooling to thousands of 'mutilatini'—children blinded or maimed by unexploded wartime landmines. On his deathbed in Milan in 1956 at age fifty-three, he completed a final act of love by donating his corneas to two blind children, sparking Italy’s modern organ donor movement. Pope Benedict XVI beatified him in Milan's Piazza del Duomo in 2009.
