Beatrice Faumuina

Beatrice Roini Liua Faumuina was born on October 23, 1974, in Auckland to Samoan immigrant parents. Exhibiting rare explosive power and spinning athleticism as a teenager, Faumuina emerged as Oceania's premier discus thrower under coach Les Mills, winning silver at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada.

In 1997, Faumuina made international track and field history. At the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Athens, Greece, she launched the discus to 66.82 meters, capturing the World Championship gold medal. She became the first athlete from New Zealand ever to win a gold medal at the World Championships. Her personal best throw of 68.52 meters, set in Melbourne in 1997, remains the unbroken Oceania continental record nearly three decades later.

Faumuina claimed back-to-back Commonwealth Games gold medals at Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and Manchester in 2002. She represented New Zealand at four consecutive Olympic Games (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008), carrying the New Zealand flag at the 2004 Athens Olympics opening ceremony. Appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM), she serves as a prominent youth ambassador and CEO of the Best Employment Solutions trust.
