Ashwani Kumar

Ashwani Kumar was born on October 26, 1952, in New Delhi, the son of Prabodh Chandra, an esteemed freedom fighter, education minister, and Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. Educated at St. Stephen's College and the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, he earned his Master of Laws and Doctorate in Law from Panjab University. In 1986, at age 34, Kumar was designated Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India—one of the youngest lawyers ever accorded the distinction.

Kumar served as Additional Solicitor General of India (1990–1991) and was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab for three consecutive terms (2002–2016). In the Manmohan Singh administration, he served as Union Minister of State for Industry and Commerce, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, and Union Minister for Law and Justice (2012–2013). As Law Minister, he championed judicial reforms, national litigation policies, and alternative dispute mechanisms. In 2013, he was appointed Special Envoy of Prime Minister Singh to Japan, playing an instrumental role in elevating Indo-Japanese strategic and nuclear partnerships, for which the Emperor of Japan conferred upon him the Imperial Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun. A prolific author, Kumar has penned seminal books on constitutionalism, human dignity, and global diplomacy.
