Arriving in Paris at the invitation of poet Paul Verlaine, Rimbaud ignited a turbulent artistic and personal tempest that culminated in Brussels in 1873. That same year, in agonizing isolation on his mother's farm in Roche, he penned 'A Season in Hell' (Une Saison en Enfer), an astonishing prose-poetry confession chronicling spiritual despair and aesthetic rebirth. He followed with 'Illuminations', creating visionary, kaleidoscopic free-verse poems that shattered traditional French prosody.
Astonishingly, before reaching his twenty-second birthday, Rimbaud ceased writing poetry forever. He spent the remainder of his life wandering across Europe, Egypt, Yemen, and the Horn of Africa as a merchant, coffee trader, and explorer in Harar (modern Ethiopia). Stricken with bone cancer, he was transported back to Marseille, where he died on November 10, 1891, at the young age of thirty-seven. His brief, blazing literary life established him as the archetypal rebel genius whose incandescent imagery reshaped 20th-century art, literature, and rock culture.
